1. residue ['rɛzɪdu]

N-COUNT A residue of something is a small amount that remains after most of it has gone. 残留物,剩余

eg: The residue of estate belongs to his son.

剩余财产属于他的儿子。

 

2. fluke [fluk]

N-COUNT If you say that something good is a fluke, you mean that it happened accidentally rather than by being planned or arranged. 侥幸;意想不到

eg: She is not usually good at tennis; that winning stroke was a fluke.

她平时网球打得并不好,那取胜的一击不过是侥幸而已。

 

3. evade [ɪ'ved]

V-T If you evade something, you find a way of not doing something that you really ought to do. 逃避;

V-T If you evade a question or a topic, you avoid talking about it or dealing with it. 回避 (问题、话题);

V-T If you evade someone or something, you move so that you can avoid meeting them or avoid being touched or hit. 避开

eg: Give me a direct answer, and stop evading the issue.

给我一个直截了当的回答,不要回避这一问题。

 

4. sanction ['sæŋkʃən]

V-T If someone in authority sanctions an action or practice, they officially approve of it and allow it to be done. 批准; 认可;

N-UNCOUNT Sanction is also a noun. 批准; 认可

N-PLURAL Sanctions are measures taken by countries to restrict trade and official contact with a country that has broken international law. 国际制裁

eg: The UN imposed some economic sanctions against Iraq.

联合国对伊拉克实行了经济制裁。

note: impose, V-T If you impose something on people, you use your authority to force them to accept it. 强制实行.

 

5. high-profile [hai'prəufai]

ADJ A high-profile person or a high-profile event attracts a lot of attention or publicity. 引人注目的

eg: The Secretary of Defence is a high-profile position.

国防部长是个引人注目的职位。

 

6. autonomous [ɔ'tɑnəməs]

ADJ An autonomous country, organization, or group governs or controls itself rather than being controlled by anyone else. 自治的;

ADJ An autonomous person makes their own decisions rather than being influenced by someone else. 独立自主的

eg: Building an autonomous robot would not be the hard part.

真正困难的部分并不是建造一部自主的机器人。

 

7. accountability [ə,kaʊntə'bɪləti]

n. responsibility to someone or for some activity. 负有责任;有义务

eg: Having a supervisor sign does not give the same level of accountability.

有监管人员的签名并不能说明同样层次的责任性。

 

8. synergy ['sɪnɚdʒi]

N-VAR If there is synergy between two or more organizations or groups, they are more successful when they work together than when they work separately. 协同作用

eg: There's quite obviously a lot of synergy between the two companies.

这两家公司间非常明显的产生了巨大的协同效应。

 

9. harness ['hɑrnɪs]

V-T If you harness something such as an emotion or natural source of energy, you bring it under your control and use it. 利用;

N-COUNT A harness is a set of straps which fit under a person's arms and fasten around their body in order to keep a piece of equipment in place or to prevent the person moving from a place. 背带; 安全带

eg: Scientists have known how to harness the limitless power of the sun.

科学家们已经知道如何利用无穷无尽的太阳能。

 

10. mete [mit]

V/N (to) measure 测量; 给予

N a mark, limit, or boundary (esp in the phrase metes and bounds) ,a line that indicates a boundary 界标

eg: The judge meted out severe penalties.

法官对犯人予以严惩。

 

11. shutter ['ʃʌtɚ] 

N-COUNT Shutters are wooden or metal covers fitted on the outside of a window. They can be opened to let in the light, or closed to keep out the sun or the cold. 百叶窗

vt. 为…装百叶窗;以百叶窗遮闭,(永久性或暂时)停业,关店

eg: The company shuttered its Hong Kong investment banking business a year ago.

该公司一年前停止了香港投资银行的业务。

 

12. informant [ɪn'fɔrmənt]

N-COUNT An informant is someone who gives another person a piece of information. 信息提供者;

N-COUNT An informant is the same as an informer. 告密者

eg: The journalist did not want to reveal the identity of his informant.

那个新闻工作者不想透露消息提供人的身份。
